Early Treatment of Sports Injuries and
Why It’s Important

A sports injury is never fun, no athlete wants to see their performance decrease or have to stop practicing, and playing the sport they love.

Treating a sports injury as soon as it occurs is the first step towards a quick recovery. At Rapid Orthopaedic Care, located in both Olympia and Lacey, our Orthopaedic trained specialists are experts in treating sports injuries.

Best of all, no appointment is needed when you come to one of our ROC facilities! You can walk-in and we will have your injury diagnosed and treated in about an hour.

Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation (RICE)

When a sports injury first occurs, pain and swelling can be often be decreased with RICE. General recommendations are:

  • Rest. Stop practicing or playing.
  • Ice. Apply ice to the injured area in ten minutes on, ten minutes off intervals several times a day.
  • Compression. Loosely wrap an elastic bandage over the injured area.
  • Elevation. Raise the injured body part above the heart.

Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications may also be used. Advil, Aleve, and Motrin are commonly used and readily available at supermarkets and pharmacies.

If the pain or swelling is significant, further evaluation by an Orthopaedic specialist at Rapid Orthopaedic Care and help to provide a diagnosis as well as initiate an appropriate treatment plan.

Treatment Options at Rapid Orthopaedic Care

Our Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine specialists can often treat sprains, strains, partial ligament tears, and overuse injuries conservatively using:

  • Activity modification

  • Immobilization
  • Injections
  • Prescription anti-inflammatory medications

Emergency Treatment

Injuries, where a bone is fractured or thought to be fractured, require immediate medical attention. Fractures that do not break the skin can be seen at ROC facilities.

Fractures that break the skin should be taken directly to the Emergency Room.

Once a fracture is diagnosed, a treatment plan is prescribed. Many fractures can be treated with immobilization. Others may require surgery to place the fractured bone back into proper alignment.
